You’re about to go out, getting ready, a bit rushed: you grab your skirt, quickly put it on… and *snap*, the zipper gives out! You really have nothing else to wear (!), it’s pure panic!!! <\/p>\n\n

It only takes a few minutes to fix the mishap, and all you need is a pair of scissors, thread (it doesn’t even have to match!), and a needle. <\/p>\n\n

The demonstration is shown on a disassembled zipper for clarity, but rest assured, you don’t have to unpick the entire zipper! <\/p>\n\n

Warning! This trick only works on metal-toothed zippers; for nylon zippers, it’s a bit trickier, and the chances of success are slim, especially if you’re a bit stressed… <\/p>\n\n

First, you need to unpick the bottom of the zipper to give yourself some room to work, then cut it above the metal stop piece and remove the slider. I advise against trying to open the metal stop piece with scissor tips while stressed; it’s easy to slip and injure yourself, and then your evening is truly ruined! <\/p>\n\n

Next, you need to recut the zipper at the point where the tooth broke and, with the zipper still flat, cut the undamaged part to the same level. Generally, zippers break at the bottom, so there’s not much to remove: if the break is too high, there’s no point trying to repair it, as you won’t be able to put the garment on. <\/p>\n\n

The slightly tricky part is rethreading the slider onto the zipper, making sure both sides are perfectly aligned, otherwise, once the slider is up, one or two teeth will be loose on one side, and a piece of the zipper will create a bump!<\/p>\n\n

If you feel calm and are quite handy, you can also, after cutting both ends of the zipper to free them, try to put the slider back in place by catching the teeth with the free part of the slider without cutting the damaged end. This method leaves a tiny bit more length, and that can be useful! <\/p>\n\n

The end is very simple: with thread and a needle, you just need to replace the metal stop by firmly sewing the two rows of metal teeth together ABOVE the broken tooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there you have it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All you have to do is put the bottom of the zipper back in place with a few stitches (and even then, if you haven’t unpicked too much, nothing will show on the right side) and put on your skirt or pants… carefully! It would be a shame to have done all that for nothing… <\/p>\n\n\n\n
